Luca suggested we head out to get something to eat. I was all for it. We had driven up the hill towards his place so that he could get changed out of his blood-stained clothes, but his brother, Jett, had appeared and that’s when our group began to break apart.

Birdie, who must have gone almost an entire day without seeing her boyfriend, jumped out of the truck and rushed over to him. I didn’t need to see them making out, so I respectfully turned away to face Imelda in the back seat. She was also trying not to look at it, so took to staring at the stitching detail on the hem of her dress.

“So… how long have you been in the witch police, or whatever it’s called?” I asked. Small talk is at the bottom of my list of skills.

“A year, maybe thirteen months. I don’t remember the exact date that I started, and it’s been crazy from day one,” she replied. “We’ve been looking at the events in Vanish Valley for a while, going all the way back to the event that triggered the sinkhole which I… oh I shouldn’t be talking about that.” She gasped and brought a hand up to cover her mouth as if she had said too much. I screwed my forehead to try and figure out what she was suggesting.

“Hey, sorry it took so long,” Luca announced as he got back behind the steering wheel. “Quite a show!” he laughed, watching his brother and my best friend kissing as if he had been out at sea on a dangerous fishing mission.

“They’re intense. I guess she isn’t coming for lunch then,” I frowned. Now we would have a third wheel that we barely knew, at least with Birdie being there someone would have been talking the whole time. Sometimes people feel comfortable in the silent moments, I like to have them filled with banal chatter, even if it isn’t me doing the talking.

Luca turned around outside their place and drove back down the dirt track towards the town center. I had to assume we would be eating at Moonshine and I hoped that Imelda was ready to dig into some local cuisine, I didn’t know where she was from but guessed it wouldn’t be so cowboy oriented.

“Table for three?” Ronnie asked as we walked through the saloon doors. “Who’s this?”

“Imelda something from someplace,” I said. “The corner booth is fine.”

“McClory,” Imelda whispered. “My last name is McClory.”

“Would you guys like a menu tonight?” Ronnie asked. He knew I wouldn’t need it; I’d had the menu here memorized since I was a kid, and it hadn’t changed much since then. Imelda took a leather-bound menu from Ronnie’s hands and told us she would inspect the specials board and join us at the table shortly.

We slid across the booth seats and both took a breath. “I feel like things have been weird since the earthquake,” Luca began. I felt my whole-body tense up.

“I guess,” I replied.

“I don’t want you to feel like there are things you can’t talk to me about.
